Several major efforts continue to develop under the auspices of the Rivers Project:
A formal "Rivers Curriculum" has been developed under a National Science Foundation grant. The units on biology, chemistry, earth science, geography, language arts, and mathematics are applicable to any river in the world. Those units are for sale at the Rivers project and are published by Dale Seymour, a subsidiary of Pearson Learning.
The Clean Water Celebration, held each March in Peoria, IL, features Rivers Project students and their concerns and interests. Students from Midwestern high schools gather to share ideas and experiences gained as a result of their participation in the Project. A student leadership conference in river and water issues is held in conjunction with the Celebration.
Rivers Project training sessions are held in July and August each year. Teachers from across the country learn to help students as the rivers curriculum is implemented.
Zebra Mussel Mania Traveling Trunks tell the story of this alien invader. A cooperative effort was undertaken with the Illinois Natural History Survey, the University of Illinois' Water Resources Center and the Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant to produce Zebra Mussel education materials. Two units for middle schools were developed and are currently available.
The Illinois Middle School Groundwater Project, a W. K Kellogg Foundation funded project, works to introduce drinking and groundwater education to middle school students and teachers.
