English & Language Arts
The English Department at Woonsocket High School consists of thirteen full time teachers, two reading
specialists/literacy teachers and four Special Education Inclusion teachers. There is a department chair,
who is also responsible for the English Language Arts Department at Woonsocket Middle School.
All teachers teach three blocks of English Language Arts (ELA) per day. There are four levels of courses
available to all students: Honors, College Level, Academic Level classes and English as a Second Language.
One teacher is responsible for the Theatre Arts courses, which include drama and dance.
All students must take four years of English in order to partially fulfill graduation requirements according
to the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE). Along with course work, individual portfolio
development is the major form of assessment in accordance with the "Graduation by Proficiency" initiative
developed by RIDE.
