The Member of the Wedding takes place in August 1944, at the end of World War II. The war would end during the next summer of the novel. The war, which began in 1939, had severely changed the outlook of the United States. During the war, American men were sent overseas in the war effort while demanding for the first time in the country's history that women join the work force all together. The book only deals with the subject of war slightly, as news reports stream in over the radio. The main focus of the novel was on a young female named Frankie; protagonist, who tires to find herself.
