As the newly appointed Principal of Woonsocket High School (WHS), I would like to welcome you to another
academic year and wish you many successes in your personal and professional lives. I am excited about my
role in the district and would like to reassure you that I will focus my energy on facilitating best educational
practices for your child in school. My educational philosophy centers on the notion that all students can
learn to their maximum potential if provided proper resources and incentives.
In recent years, Rhode Island has embarked on a series of reforms to improve educational quality. The core
component of these reforms is that obtaining a high school diploma merely by accumulating credits is no longer
a valid practice. Now, in order to graduate, all students must reach the proficiency level by completing a
battery of formal and informal assessments, the so-called Proficiency Based Graduation Requirements (PBGR).
The PBGR provide students with various opportunities to demonstrate proficiency in subject areas and to apply
learning skills either in post-secondary education or in the work place. Additionally, students are required
to meet comprehensive local and state assessments in order to graduate. Establishing an environment that
facilitates this process is a challenge that entails a concerted effort on the part of administrators,
teachers, and students and their families. I strongly believe in involving parents in the decision-making
process and that educators and families must work collaboratively towards shaping students’ academic success.
Consequently, faculty and administrators at WHS look forward to your support in carrying out this new
graduation policy.
The new graduation requirements are complex and, as a result, may pose significant challenges to you.
In order to assist you, we will conduct a series of on-site meetings, as we progress throughout the year,
and give you ample opportunities to interact with school officials and have your concerns addressed.
Meanwhile, I strongly encourage you to contact your school should any questions regarding this new policy arise.
Administrators and faculty at WHS wish you and your child a productive academic year!
Thank you for your support and I look forward to strengthening our partnership.
Yours sincerely,
Dr. Lourenço Garcia
